Weight Management

Is your weight affecting your health? Do you feel frustrated about it? Do you want to change? If yes, then you’ve come to the right place!

Behavior, environment, and genetic factors may have an effect in causing people to be overweight and obese.

If you are obese or overweight, this means that you are carrying excess body fat. Being overweight or obese is not just about how you look, it causes and is closely linked with a large number of health conditions, including:

  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Unhealthy cholesterol
  • Asthma
  • Sleep apnea
  • Gallstones
  • Kidney stones
  • Infertility
  • 11 types of cancers, including leukemia, breast, and colon cancer
  • Venous disorders including swelling, varicose veins, venous ulcers and deep vein thrombosis
  • Arthritis

No less real are the social and emotional effects of obesity, including:

  • Discrimination
  • Lower quality of life
  • Susceptibility to depression

Did you know that losing as little as 5 to 10 percent of body weight offers major health benefits to people who are overweight/ obese, even if they never achieve their “ideal” weight, and even if they only begin to lose weight later in life!

At Altima Wellness Centre, our dietitian will help you determine the cause of excess weight, assess the risk of developing health problems and will work with you to lose that weight in a healthy and safe manner.

Note: Many individuals do not look overweight and are not too heavy on the scale but may have high percentage of body fat in relation to percentage body muscle, which may put them at a higher risk of developing health problems. Your dietitian will measure that for you to determine your risk level.
