Lumbar Disc Herniation

As a result of disc degeneration and break down, sometimes inner material leaks out and covers the outer portion of the disc. This condition is known as disc herniation.

Common symptoms of lumbar disc herniation are as follow:

  • Leg or foot pain, which can happen with or without lower back pain
  • Numbness or tingling sensation in the leg or foot
  • Pain in the lower back or buttock

Conservative treatment options of lumbar disc herniation include:

  • Physical therapy
  • Chiropractic manipulation
  • Heat/Ice therapy

If the pain persists more than six weeks, it is reasonable to consider surgical options.

Neck Strain

Neck strain is the injury to the neck area. Common causes of neck strain are as follow:

  • Whiplash, which often happens in accidents
  • Repetitive or prolonged neck extension
  • Abnormal posture

Common symptoms of neck strain are as follow:

  • Pain
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Tingling sensation

If the pain persists for more than a few days, physiotherapy and chiropractic can often help a lot. Treatments may include traction, physical modalities, laser therapy, stretching and strengthening exercises. It is normally suggested that the patient gets 7-8 sessions of treatment followed by massage therapy.

Osteoarthritis

Arthritis is inflammation of the joint, there are different kinds of Arthritis but the most common one is Osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis can affect both large and small joints. It starts with minor pain during activity, and in aged population it can cause pain in rest position.

Currently, there is no cure for Osteoarthritis but one can prevent Osteoarthritis from worsening by doing physical therapy to strengthen muscles and joints. Weight loss is also very important to reduce stress on joints. In severe cases, surgery is the only possible option.

Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of plantar fascia. This medical condition is caused by repetitive strain to the ligament that supports the arch. Plantar fasciitis typically causes more problems in people who are:

  • Subject to prolonged standing or walking
  • Have tight Achilles tendon or tight calf muscles
  • Overweight
  • Pregnant

Rotator Cuff Tendinitis

Rotator cuff tendinitis is a very common medical condition. Rotator cuff is a group of four tendons and muscles that surround the shoulder joint. Rotator cuff tendinitis is inflammation of the tendons when they are injured.

Two common symptoms of Rotator cuff tendinitis are pain and weakness of shoulder. In some people pain can travel down to the arm and all the way to the elbow.  Most common causes of rotator cuff tendinitis are as follows:

  • Strain
  • Injury (sport, accident, work, etc.)
  • Repetitive or sudden movements

Sciatica

Sciatica is irritation/compression of the nerve. Common symptoms include:

  • Lower and buttock pain
  • Numbness in some parts of leg or foot

Sciatica is usually diagnosed by physical examination and history of symptoms. Spinal disc herniation, spinal stenosis, Piriformis syndrome and pregnancy can be different causes of sciatica. It is common that medication won’t help in most cases; especially NSAIDS do not appear to help acute Sciatica. Research has shown that spinal manipulation is an effective treatment for acute sciatica and is totally safe for the treatment of sciatica related pain.

Tension Headache

Tension headache is one of the most common types of headache. It is usually described as constant pressure over the head, and it can last from few minutes to days. It is also more common in women than men. Some causes of tension headache are as follow:

  • Not getting enough sleep (i.e., lack of sleep)
  • Not eating well (i.e., poor diet)
  • Stress
  • Bad posture

Whiplash

Whiplash is a common injury to the neck area; it is also called neck strain or sprain. Whiplash injuries are mainly due to rear impacts and normally occur after sudden acceleration-deceleration forces. Motor Vehicle Accidents (e.g., car accidents) are common causes of whiplash injuries that if stays untreated it might eventually lead to severe conditions including depression and anxiety. Some symptoms of whiplash are as follow:

  • Neck stiffness
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Shoulder and back pain
  • Difficulty swallowing

Whiplash injury is treatable, especially when diagnosed early and therapy starts soon after the accident. The appropriate treatment is unique to each injury, however your therapist might recommend the following to treat whiplash injuries:

  • Special stretching and strengthening exercises
  • Mobilization and manual therapy
  • Muscle relaxation and simulation
